Laser peening is a surface treatment technique that improves the mechanical performance of metals. When a high-power pulsed laser is focused and irradiated on a metal in water, plasma is produced on the metal surface. The plasma pressure at the sample surface can be increased by suppressing the plasma expansion with the plasma confinement layer. Generally, water is used as the plasma confinement layer. However, chemical reaction on the surface of metal due to the presence of water can cause rust. The purpose of this study is to investigate laser peening process by using solid state medium as the plasma confinement layer.
