Laser peening is a surface treatment technique that improves the mechanical performance of metals, which can induce a compressive residual stress and a work hardened layers at metal surface. The second harmonics (λ=532 nm) of Nd: YAG laser which has less absorption in water has been used in many studies in laser peening. Since the second harmonics have to convert the fundamental wave of Nd: YAG laser in the efficiency of about 50 %, the energy efficiency have a reduction in laser peening process. In this study, we have used a near infrared laser (λ=1064 nm) for efficient laser peening and investigated the effect of laser peening when the thickness of the plasma confinement layer is varied.
